There are countless guides and books to being successful, however, as success is personal and unique to each individual. The advice contained in these books can often not be relevant. Therefore following the advice of a single individual can often be unhelpful.

With this in mind, considering the advice of a great many people, people whose ideas of success were different both to each other, and quite possibly, to you can be a good alternative.

Being a successful artist has always been extremely difficult, imagine if he decided to give up this ambition in favour of something easier?

Oftentimes, people often decided to put their dreams aside for something more “realistic”. To give up their dream for something easier. This quote teaches us the danger of such a point of view.

2.Find what you love to do and do it.

“You know you are on the road to success if you would do your job and not be paid for it.”

This is a good quote to remember and think about when you’re at work.

Imagine being as successful as possible in your current job. Ultimately you’ll probably find yourself working extremely hard and this it will take up much of your time.

If it’s a job you hate, then being successful at it might only mean filling your life with something you hate to do. What’s the sense in this?

Instead, why not focus on doing something you love? When you’ve found what you’re passionate about, you get the motivation to keep you moving. Success at this means the fulfilment of your dreams.

3. Learn how to balance life.

All too often, people think that to be successful, they need to make the object of their success their life.

If a person thinks their job will lead them to success, then they may spend countless hours per day, and well into the evening working hard.

However this comes at the cost of rest, your health and having an enjoyable life. Ultimately they may burn out and cease to be successful at their job anyway.

If success comes from having a strong social life and a good group of friends, their job may suffer; meaning that they may lose their job, and then be unable to afford going out with friends.

4. Do not be afraid of failure.

“Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.”

There is a story, it’s unconfirmed whether it actually happened, yet the message within is none the less true:

Thomas Edison inventing the lightbulb was the result of several hundred failed attempts. In an interview, he was asked “How do you feel after all of your failed attempts?”

His response was great, “I didn’t fail, I learned hundreds of ways not to invent the lightbulb”

He saw each “failure” as a lesson. From that lesson he learned what won’t work, and also might work instead.

Each failed attempt, each rejection, were key steps on his path to success. It is easy to feel like you should give up after a failure. But perhaps in that failure is a lesson.

Pay attention to your failures, study them. Perhaps then you’ll learn how to succeed.

5. Have an unwavering resolution to succeed.

It’s the easiest thing in the world to give up from a failure. The only way to push on is if you have the true burning desire to succeed, to not be moved or dissuaded from your goals.

If you are not truly dedicated towards success, then each failure will hurt more, each set back will slow you down.

Success is hard; without the unwavering desire to succeed, this difficulty may seem insurmountable. With the desire, it is merely an obstacle to go through.

6. Be a person of action.

“It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things.”

Though it was said hundreds of years ago, it works just as much today as it ever had. It applies to literally any successful person.

Think about it, picture someone like William Shakespeare:

When we think of the time he lived in, we think of the time in a way shaped by him. When we think of Renissance era Italy, we think of Michaelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci.

Bill Gates or Steve Jobs. Our current way of life would simply be incomparably different if they didn’t accomplish what they did.

You’re probably reading this article on a device by a company that they either founded or companies influenced by them.

All these figures were proactive, they saw ways to do things differently and did them. If they let the world shape them, then they’d simply fit into the background. Instead they shaped the world.

Don’t be afraid of going outside the norm. If you can think of a better way to do something, do it that way. If you fail, try again.

7. Avoid conflicts.

It’s logical. If someone likes you, they want to help you; if you give them a suggestion, they’ll gladly follow through with it.

But if someone doesn’t like you, they may either refuse to help or actively get in your way.

What’s more, it’s always a good idea to cultivate good relationships. You can never tell who will prove to become someone who’ll be able to help you in a big way, or even be a good and supportive friend.

As such, help people and they may help you; and be good to people, and they my be good to you.

8. Don’t be afraid of introducing new ideas.

“A person with a new idea is a crank until the idea succeeds.”

It is an unfortunate truth that those with the boldest ideas are often disregarded.

Most of us are taught from an early age to think and do things similarly to everyone else. This can be great to fill an existing role. But to truly do things differently (and all successful people did things differently), you need to think differently.

If you have a new idea, don’t throw it away because it’s new and different; instead, celebrate it. Your strange new idea might one day be the one that leads you to success.

9. Believe in your capacity to succeed.

Success has to be something you can imagine yourself achieving.

If you stay positive and think like this, setbacks won’t affect you so much, people’s doubts won’t impact you and even the biggest obstacles will seem like minor problems.

How to Become a Motivational Speaker and Influence Millions of People


Have you ever dreamed of being the next Martin Luther King (minus the tragedy) or Tony Robbins? Would you love to travel the globe speaking to, and inspiring, millions of people with your message?

If you answered yes, then you have come to the right place.

Even though you have the goal and the dream of being a motivational speaker, that doesn’t mean that it’s easy to accomplish. It takes a lot of effort and dedication. It’s not for the faint of heart.

But it can be done! There are plenty of people in the world who make a living as a motivational speaker. So, why not you?

Let’s take a look at how to become a motivational speaker and make your mark on this world.

1. Pick your topic

This might sound obvious, but you do need to know what you want to talk about. And it’s not always as easy as you think.

For example, I have a Ph.D. in communication, but I could talk about endless topics related to that topic. So you have to choose either what you’re an expert in, or at least what you are the most passionate about.

2. Know your main message

Now that you have your topic, how are you going to narrow it down?

For example, let’s say you are passionate about environmental issues. Well, that’s a pretty broad topic. What exactly about the environment do you think is most important? What do you most need to teach people?

3. Identify the end-goal for your audience

What do you want the audience to do or believe as a result of your speech? Do you want them to take some action to make their lives better? Do you want to change their belief or value system? How are the people in your audience going to be better people because they heard your speech?

4. Know your audience

Now that you know what you want your audience to do or think after your speech, who exactly are you speaking to? It really depends on your topic.

However, there are some topics that are relevant to every human being on the planet, while others are only pertinent to, say, only parents. Who do you want to speak to?

5. Make sure your message is relevant and timely to your audience

You want to teach your audience something new. You want it to be relevant to their lives and think that your message benefits them in some way. They will zone out and fall asleep if you teach them how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

I’m exaggerating, of course. But you don’t want to tell them something they already know. You want to challenge them.

6. Hire a public speaking coach

You might be brand-new to public speaking. If so, you’re going to need some training.

You don’t want to be boring with your delivery. And you don’t want to confuse the audience with lack of organization.

You want to put on a good “show,” and in order to do that, you might have to take an extra step and hire a professional coach to help you hone your speaking skills.

7. Watch yourself on video tape

Obviously, no one is able to step outside their body and see what they look like to other people. That’s where video comes in.

If you want to improve your public speaking skills, you first have to know what you look like. Once you view yourself speaking on video, you’ll know what you need to improve upon.

8. Incorporate visual aids, props, or equipment where relevant.

People are visual, so it’s advisable to have some sort of visual aid or prop. It’s more difficult for people to follow along with your speech if they don’t have something else to look at other than you. Plus, visual aids help explain what you’re talking about and keeps the audience’s attention.

9. Find your audience

Who is your audience? Are you speaking to women? To children? To business owners? To disabled people? It is imperative that you narrow down your target audience.

Then, you need to find them. And then advertise to them, so they will be interested in seeing you speak.

10. Network

As the saying goes, “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” So start networking as much as you can.

Carry your business cards everywhere, and develop an “elevator speech” so that you can tell people exactly what you speak about. The more you spread the word about your speaking, the more people will get interested in you.

11. Do free speaking gigs in the beginning

Let’s face it – Tony Robbins didn’t become “Tony Robbins” overnight. He was a nobody at some point in his life.

And if you’re not a “nobody,” then great! But if you are, don’t fret. You can become a “somebody,” but you might need to do speaking gigs for free at first. Once you gain a reputation, then people will want to pay you for your services.

12. Sign up for conventions that offer speakers

There are plenty of conventions that seek out speakers. So, try to find some that are relevant to your topic and apply to be a speaker.

Again, you may have to do it for free, but at least you’ll likely be speaking to your target audience.

13. Register with a speaker’s bureau.

There are many speaker’s bureaus that you can join. Just get on the internet and Google the ones closest to you.

Start locally, and then you can branch out to other geographical areas once you start gaining momentum.

14. Develop a marketing plan

You might be a great speaker, but are you good at marketing yourself? Maybe, but maybe not.

You can’t reach your goals – or your audience – if you don’t have a marketing plan. Make sure you include both short-term and long-term goals.

15. Hire a marketing or public relations expert to help you

If you don’t even know where to begin writing a marketing plan, or implementing it, then you might want to consider hiring professionals to do it for you.

Yes, it will cost money. But in the long run, it might be worth it to have someone in charge of marketing who knows what they’re doing.

16. Ask for feedback

Once you do start your speaking career, ask the audience for feedback. Asking for feedback will help you learn and improve twice as fast.

You can construct your own evaluation form to distribute after the speech. Hopefully the audience will be honest and give you constructive feedback. But don’t make it too long, because they might not finish it if it is.

17. Use social media

These days, marketing via social media is a must for any business or individual. You can get the word out via your own personal accounts, and you can also set up accounts to use professionally.

Facebook has fan pages, and you can easily create it and then invite your friends to follow you.

18. Develop a website

Just as with social media, every business needs a website. It’s just mandatory in this day and age.

Choosing a domain name with your own name (or some variation of it like “janesmithspeaker.com”) is the best idea. You can create your own for free or hire a professional to make it for you.

Becoming a motivational speaker takes a lot of effort, and it doesn’t happen overnight. But it is a great way to earn a living or simply just to earn a few extra bucks.

Life coaching is not just a fad. It is a useful and practical service industry that is here to stay.

Life coaching is a life changing partnership that helps people reach their potential. It is not counseling. Here is an easy explanation to differentiate between counseling and life coaching:

Counseling helps you deal with major life problems, such as depression, divorce, and death of a loved one. Whereas, life coaching helps you realize your goals and dreams, such as getting a job promotion, writing a book, or achieving a weight loss goal.

Every life coaching practice is different, but the premise of life coaching is for an individual to partner with a coach so they can receive counsel and encouragement to achieve their personal and/or career goals.

Before I married my husband and had children, I had a life coaching practice for several years. I also personally use a life coach. We have an hourly call once a month.

Life coaching works. I am stating this not only because I have seen it in my own clients’ successes, but it has worked for me personally.

While these are some signs that you need a life coach, here are more reasons why you need to find a life coach today:

1. Find Your Life Purpose

We all have the innate desire to be special and important. It doesn’t necessarily mean that you want to be on a stage or receive a standing ovation. It means that we each have an intrinsic desire to have a life that is of meaning. To be of value to this world in some way is the cry of our soul.

We each have a purpose in this world, but for most of us, it is not exactly clear what that purpose may be. A life coach can help you discover this in yourself.

For many, we have life experiences that shape and mold who we have become. We can use these experiences, both good and bad, to find our meaning in the world.

A life coach can help you unlock this potential for meaningful purpose. They can help you process your past and find the meaning and purpose for your life. It can be something positive.

For example, you may have twice performed CPR on strangers who had medical emergencies. You saved their lives and this left a lasting impact on you as a person that you felt within your soul and being. After you talked with your life coach for several sessions, you may decide that your job at a hardware store is not your purpose. You have come to realize that you react well in emergency situations and you find great meaning in helping others.

Your experience of saving those two individuals by your quick thinking and actions left an impression on you. You now realize that you want to become an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician).

You have found that your purpose is to save lives in real emergency situations. The next step with your life coach is working on discovering and creating a plan of action that will get you to the goal of being an EMT.

You may love your career, but you don’t feel that is your end purpose. Perhaps you have a yearning for something more meaningful. Your life coach can help you discover that purpose even if it means staying in your current career.

Also, it should be noted that it doesn’t necessarily need to be a positive experience that drives your purpose. For example, perhaps you are a widow because your spouse committed suicide. It happened a number of years ago and you have healed and found that telling your story to others now has helped a number of individuals and families.

You discover in your conversations with your life coach that you would like to channel your story and experience into helping others. This is your purpose. Your life coach can help you discuss what kind of options are out there and what you may be thinking.

In the end, after weeks of discussion and researching possible options, you have decided that you will become involved in your local suicide prevention organization. You find that there is a very active local chapter with opportunities for speaking.

Your life coach helps you set goals including meeting with the chapter president so you can help with the organization’s goal of suicide prevent. The end result is that you meet with the president and you asked to speak at their next public event about suicide prevention.

You are able to share your story along with the warning signs and how families can help their loved one who may be suicidal. Your purpose has clearly come into focus and fruition because of your life coaching partnership.

2. Unlock the Answers Within Yourself

Are you your perfect self? Have you achieved everything you want to be in life? Have you run out of things to improve in your life?

If you answered no to any of the above questions, then you can benefit from hiring a life coach.

Even if you don’t know what you want to improve just yet, or you don’t know what purpose you have in this world, a life coach can help you discover these things in yourself.

A life coach does not have the answers for you. However, they can help you unlock the answers in yourself.

Sometimes, you don’t even know it is in you, until the right questioning and person comes along. That right person is likely a life coach if you can’t put your finger on your future and what you want.

Life coaches are trained to question. They are not advice givers. Instead, they know the right questions and how to ask them in a way that gets you thinking introspectively.

They are positive, encouraging, and open to your ideas, thoughts, and their desire is to unlock the answers within you for yourself. They don’t want to provide you with your answers. They can guide you, but truly the answers lie within yourself.

A life coach will partner with you to help you find the answers in you about yourself, even if you don’t know or believe that you have the answers. You do. You just have to trust the process and trust yourself.

3. Develop Steps to Improve Yourself

Once you know what it is that you want to achieve and you have unlocked your passion, desires, and hopes, it’s then that the work begins.

Your life coach can help you achieve your goals, whether they are self improvement or career related. They partner with you to help you develop a plan of action. Your life coach will work with you to develop a step-by-step plan in achieving your goals.

For example, imagine that you have decided that your goal is to write a children’s book about overcoming cancer. You made this decision because you overcame cancer as a child and you want to help other children with cancer have hope in their bleak situation. You also have the desire to create an awareness among children about cancer and its affects.

Your life coach will likely ask you questions about how long you think it will take you to write the book, how you plan to obtain illustrations, and thoughts about publishing options. Those discussions will help you brainstorm the process of everything it takes (that you know) to write and publish a children’s book.

From there, you set goals to achieve before your next call. For example, you decide that you will try to write a first draft of the book before your next call that is happening in two weeks. You also determine another task or goal in the next two weeks is reaching out to your friend who is an artist, and may be interested in drawing for the book. A third task on your list is to research online how children’s books are published.

Your discussion along with the tasks and goals to achieve in the next two weeks have you moving forward toward your goal of publishing this children’s book. You have practical and realistic steps that will move you in the direction of your goal.

Whatever your goal or life purpose may be, your life coach can help you zone in on what needs to be done in the here, and now to work toward making that dream a reality.

4. Set and Achieve Goals With Someone Who is Holding You Accountable

This is one of the primary reasons I have a life coach. I am great at setting my own goals, both personally and professionally. However, life gets in the way and the lack of achieving those goals slips from days, into weeks, and then into months.

With my monthly life coaching sessions, I have overall goals. My life coach helps me break those big goals down into smaller achievable goals.

During our coaching sessions, she will ask me how much time I believe it will take to achieve the tasks involved in achieving my goals at hand. Then, I write down on my calendar the date I plan to achieve those tasks by. This helps me keep moving forward on my goals by breaking things down into achievable tasks.

I know that she is also keeping track of those dates, as she is jotting them down during the call. She will be asking me during our next call about all of the line-items and dates we had set during the previous call.

We go through each of these during the next session. It works! I don’t want to let her down. I also don’t want to let myself down. Just knowing that I have someone holding me accountable in completing the tasks and jobs that are getting me toward my dreams and goals helps me complete everything on time.

You may be thinking, “why can’t I just have a friend hold me accountable.” Sure, that may work, but it likely will not be as effective. How committed are they going to be in checking in on you and your completion of tasks every month that are helping you reach your goals?

Also, when you have money invested in the process, you have a vested stake in the matter. When you put money into something, it creates care and dedication because you don’t want that money to be wasted.

5. Start Doing Instead of Dreaming

Do you have a dream that has been put on the shelf? Perhaps it is a book you have in your mind that you have wanted to write for years, or maybe it’s a dream to travel abroad but you have been too busy with life to schedule in the trips you have dreamed about for years?

Now is the time to make that change happen. You can take your dreams off the shelf where they have been waiting and begging to be removed. You can begin to make those dreams a reality when you partner with a life coach.

A life coach can help you discover what it is that is keeping your dreams shelved, so that you can overcome the obstacles standing in the way.

For example, imagine you have wanted to adopt a dog for years, but your job has kept you too busy. You engage with your life coach to discuss this dream. Your life coach may help you discover that you do have options even with a busy job.

Through your discussion, you realize that your work load will be changing in the coming years and that there are plenty of dogs in shelters that need a home now. You are willing to pay for daily doggy daycare until you have more time at home during the week. Until that day, you can enjoy evenings and weekends with a dog who needs you and you need them.

You had shelved your dream because you felt you didn’t have enough time for the dog. However, once you realized that you have the money to provide the daytime care needed, and you could save a dog who may otherwise be euthanized, your perspective changed.

You became empowered to make your dream happen. You adopt a dog from a local shelter and the rest is history. You wouldn’t have thought about the options and your perspective being changed had it not been for the right questions being asked by your life coach.

Your coach helped you discover a real and feasible plan to make your dream a reality. The result is that you not only have your dream of owning a dog realized, but you also saved that dog’s life.

6. We All Need a Personal Cheerleader

Wouldn’t it be great to have someone cheering us on in life? Someone that rejoices in our successes, even when they are small?

If you hire a life coach, you can have your own personal life cheerleader. Your life coach wants you to succeed because it is a reflection of their work with you. They are cheering you on because you have partnered together.

One of the first people I texted after I got a book agent was my life coach. She knew I had the appointment scheduled. She responded instantly to my text with an overjoyed message of congratulations.

I knew she, of all people, would understand the work that had gone into my goal of landing a book agent. She had helped me each step of the way in setting small goals and tasks to get the agent. She was cheering me on in my proposal writing stage, my editing phase, and my pursuit of meeting with the agent. She was excited and cheering me on with words of encouragement and praise of the work that I had done to get me to that point.

Once the appointment happened and the contract was offered, I was thrilled to tell my life coach because I knew she would be excited too. It was a success for her as well. She had been helping me set my goals and was cheering me on all these months.

It is so nice to know that I have someone walking beside me in the process of pursing my goals. Friends are enthusiastic and sweet of course, but none are partnered with you like a life coach.

A life coach wants you to be successful, because your success is their success. They will be your cheerleader and don’t we all need one in this tough world!

7. Gain Better Self Understanding and Confidence

When you know who you are, you can become confident in who you are.

A life coach can help you better understand yourself. They ask questions that help you identify what matters to you most.

A life coach does not tell you what to do or how to do it. Instead, a good life coach will delve into questions that help you discover for yourself what you may not consciously know.

For example, imagine you are struggling as a mom. You can’t put your finger on what it is that is causing your failure as a mother. You just know that you feel that every day is a struggle and you don’t feel like you are doing things right.

You begin to discuss with your life coach your childhood. You realize in her probing questions that your feelings of failure and inadequacy come from your own childhood. Your mom is a perfectionist and was an incredible super-mom. You don’t feel that you could ever measure up.

In discussing what you do as a mother on a daily basis, you also realize that you are a hard working mom doing your best and trying your hardest. Your realizations help you come to the conclusion that it is your confidence in your abilities that are lacking, and not your actual mothering abilities. You decide that you will work on these issues with your life coach.

Once you can discover why your confidence is being undermined, you can begin to dismantle the false thoughts that were keeping from being a confident mom. Your shift in mom thinking has changed because your life coach asked the right questions to help uncover the truth about where your lack of confidence was stemming.

Once that was uncovered, it could be taken head on to dispel with thoughts from your past that still had a hold on you. Your life coach can then help you discover what you are doing right as a mom and build on those qualities, so you can gain even more confidence as a mother.

Sometimes, we think we know ourselves and simply think that there is something wrong with us when we feel inadequate. Instead of chalking things up to inadequacy and failure, we need to delve deeper.

Often, we can find thoughts and beliefs founded in falsehood that are keeping us from being our best self. Things that we think to be true may not be truth at all. Don’t accept the lie that you are not good enough. Find out what is causing your feelings for not being or doing enough.

Partnering with a life coach will help you discover in yourself the root of these thoughts so that they can be overcome. Your life coach will help you become more confident in who you are and what you do.

How to Find a Life Coach

Word of mouth is usually the best way to find a life coach. It you know of a friend who uses a life coach, then ask them about their experience. If they highly recommend their life coach, ask for their contact information.

If you use social media, it can also be a great resource. Ask your friends and family via social media if they know of a reputable life coach. Be sure to put below your request “no negative comments please.” There are some people who have negative opinions about therapy, life coaching, and counseling. Their opinions are not needed to hinder you in your pursuit of making yourself better.

If you are more private and not wanting to ask others, then there are websites that allow you to search for life coaches.

Keep in mind that many life coaching sessions are done by phone or even Skype. You do not need to live near a life coach to hire one. Instead, think about looking for a coach that either specializes in a specific topic in which you are searching for help, or look for one that you think would be a good match for you personally.

Don’t be concerned about location, since most coaches work by phone anyway.

How Going Back to School at 40 Helps You Create a New Golden Age


When most people think of learning, they assume it is young people in their teens and 20’s who are the most able to learn and absorb new information.

You don’t often think of going back to school at 40.

But what if I told you that actually, some of the best students aren’t young people, but those who are older?

What if being older, isn’t an obstacle but a massive advantage? Not just in the classroom, but outside of it too.

Whether you’re thinking about going back to school or not. This article is going to explain to you how going back to school at 40, helps you create a golden age in 6 fundamental ways.

To make your life easier, I’ve created specific exercises for you to follow for each one, so I will be coaching you every step of the way to success. Ready?

1. Turn Back Time & Delay the Ageing Process

Let’s start with the facts.

You don’t have the same energy you used to. You have so much more going on. You’re already beginning to see grey hairs, wrinkles and signs of wear and tear.

Between juggling work, family, health, personal growth and everything else you do – why would you want to add more to your plate? Why would you want to add homework, assignments & extra reading on top of that?

You’ve already got the qualifications you needed and life is about way more than passing as test as a spotty teenager now.

Most people would assume this kind of added pressure would increase their stress levels and wrinkles.

What if I told you going back to school at 40 wouldn’t be even more draining, but would actually help you to slow down and even delay the ageing process?

Researchers based primarily at UCL in London carried out a study investigating how educational attainment effected pieces of DNA called telomere length. These telomere work to protect the edges of our chromosomes and diminish as we age.

In their research, they found that lower educational attainment was associated with shorter telomere length. Now it doesn’t necessarily mean that education is directly causing biological ageing, but what it does tell us is that it is one indicator.

Taking this further, neuroscientists at Ruhr-University Bochum found that, similar to young people, learning in older people also resulted in a surge of brain activity.

This helped to improve things like perception & broader brain activity, and these benefits did not diminish over time as a person ages.

In other words, even if you are older, it is still not too late to go back to school and create a new golden age. You can still reap many rewards, one of them being ageing.

What you should do now:

  1. Create a table of 3 columns, and on the left, write out a list of 20-30 topics or subjects that genuinely interest you.
  2. In the middle, write a short summary of why it interests you.
  3. And on the right, do some googling and write down the names of places or courses you find interesting.

2. Skyrocket Your Motivation

If you were anything like me, education was something you may not have understood the total importance of when you were younger.

Looking back now, can you honestly say you made the most of it?

Can you honestly say you learned to the best of your ability?

Are you OK with that potential remaining untapped – even now, decades later?

Going back to school at the age of 40+ means you have an advantage many other students do not have. Perhaps the most powerful advantage of all: choice.

Because you are choosing to go back to school, it inevitably means your focus and willpower have increased. Especially for those of you who dread the thought of learning again, and aren’t sure you can handle the challenge, I want you to remember this:

The simple truth is that you are not the same student you were before. The key reason things will be different is because you will get to learn not have to learn.

In many academic institutions, course, programmes I’ve been on, the people who are the most committed and engaged are often those who are a little bit older than average.

Gone are the days of doing things for the sake of it. Forget what you may have been like before.

This time, you have a chance to return as someone who really appreciates what they are doing, and understands the consequence of doing so. In doing so, you’ll be returning with a heightened sense of self motivation you may not have experienced ever before.

And you know what makes this even better? I regularly find with my coaching clients that this is a powerful way to open up great reserves of self motivation they never knew they had. The motivation gained from one area, boosts their motivation in all other areas too.

Just imagine what you could do with that extra confidence and self motivation in other areas of your life.

What you should do now:

  1. Write down and visualize in your mind your answer to this question: “If you experienced a powerful increase in motivation and confidence, how would it affect other areas of you life?”
  2. For each answer or point, expand on it by answering “Why is that important? What becomes possible for you as a consequence?”
  3. End by answering – “How do you feel now, after completing this exercise? Why?”
  4. Enjoy being a legendary motivated beast like none before. Send your answers to me on social media.

3. Use School to Remould & Expand Your Brain

When you think about your brain, what form do you imagine it takes?

Is it hard and fixed like concrete? Set in its path and unchangeable? Or is it more like jelly – lacking any structure or clear focus?

How you answer this question is going to determine whether the years ahead or golden, or grey.

I want you to understand your brain can change shape, just like blu tack. It isn’t fixed but soft, reusable and able to be shaped to serve to any purpose that you choose.

Going back to school at 40 will shake open the doors to a golden age in your life.

But don’t take my word for it.

Let’s imagine for a moment that you decide to become a master at life drawing and oil painting later in life.

What kind of soft or hard skills are required for to improve in this area?

I’d imagine they’d be things like:

  • Creativity – to create pieces that are unique and inspiring
  • Spatial awareness – to be able to notice patterns in objects, people, places
  • Fine motor skills – so you can create detailed and enthralling pieces of art
  • Concentration – due to the long hours of deliberate practice
  • Oil painting/sketching – learning how different mediums work and when to use them
  • Analytical skills – learning how to improve every time you create something

Now let’s say you spend 1 hour per day practicing these skills and currently you have a very low rank in each of those skills.

We all know it’s true that the more you practice something, the better you get. But beneath the surface (of your skull) there are some interesting and exciting things happening in your brain.

Each time you practice shading in mid tones in your life drawing, or spend hours in flow focused on one task – the neural pathways and networks in your brain are busy firing and communicating with one another.

As you continue to develop your art skills, more of your brain’s processing power is dedicated towards those brain cells. In time, your brain learns to adapt. That’s why you get quicker, better, and more creative. Your brain is working to create more efficient pathways, even new neurons when needed.

Knowing this, how motivated are you now? Can you imagine what that would do for your confidence?

Going back to school presents you with new opportunities to learn and develop, and the most exciting part is all of those skills will be immediately transferable.

It’s not just a class or a school anymore, its training for the next golden age of your life.

What you should do now:

  1. Think back to a time you really sucked at something, or if you’re currently suck at something.
  2. Can you remember what your period of progression was?
  3. Notice where and how you got faster at that area. How did that make you feel? How did it affect your overall performance?

4. Become An Inspiration to Everyone You Know

How many people do you know who even entertain the idea of going back to school at 40, let alone take action?

Understandably, not very many.

Our lives very quickly get shackled down and dampened under the weight of our commitments and responsibilities. Some are forced upon us through circumstance, and others are self selected.

Anyone could go back to school, learn new skills, grow as a person and become happier, smarter and more fulfilled. But not everybody will.

It is not ideas alone that fuel the world, it is people that take action. And there are very, very, few of those. Dreams come free, hustle?

That’s sold separately.

One of the oldest marathon runners in the world, and a person I hugely respect is a man called Fauja Singh.

There are tens of thousands of people who run in marathons around the world every year. Even those who participate in ultra marathons, and other extreme endurance events.

Clearly, they all require a high level of mental strength and grit. But there are two things that set Fauja Singh apart for me, from everyone else.

The first is the fact that even at aged 106, he is still running and participating in marathons.

I’m going to pause for a moment, very dramatically, to allow that fact to sink in: while most of us were sleeping, watching Netflix and eating cookies, this guy was running 26+ miles at the age of 100.

The second part, I love even more, as it goes to show it is never too late.

Now you might assume that Fauja had been running for years, and been a professional athlete for many years in order to be able to achieve this wonderful feat.

That’s the thing – he wasn’t. He started running seriously at the age of 89.

Again, let us stop and pause in admiration of this incredible man.

The key takeaway here is that he is a person with the same raw elements like the rest of us. He didn’t have some special gene, or talent, or resource.

It is never too late to pick up something new, and in doing so, you have the unique opportunity to become an inspiration to the people around you. (Here’s more proof by the way.)

As Fauja continues to run in races, he is now regularly joined too by the rest of his family and friends. Not only did he usher in a new age for himself of health, confidence and growth, but he brought others along with him too.

This could be your chance to do the same. We are social creatures and there is nothing like the praise, recognition and admiration of those we respect, to really boost our self esteem.

What you should do now:

  1. On the page you’ve been reflecting on this article, find a space and draw a circle with the word “People” inside.
  2. Create a spider diagram of 10 people who are the closest to you, that you care about
  3. Next to each of their names, write down how you going back to school could be an immensely powerful and positive thing for them. What would it mean for them to see you succeed at this? Why?

5. Trigger an Avalanche of New Opportunities

Going back to school by the way, doesn’t need to mean a classroom or academic environment. All it means is focusing your mind on self improvement in a particular area. After all, there are many types of intelligences out there for you to master.

Fauja Singh went “back to school” on the race track. In doing so, he triggered an avalanche of new opportunities for himself –sponsorship deals with companies, media requests and features, speaking requests, and more.

Developing yourself in a new area will mean you open the gates to opportunities that were closed off to you.

Like a secret mission being unlocked in a video game, you’ll be able to take advantage of what the other people around you can’t. A special all access pass to a whole new world.

As an artist that might be being commissioned for unique pieces of work, or holding your own exhibition one day.

As a business owner that might mean being able to employ your friends and family, and build a closer knit world where you can spend even more quality time with them every day.

You can’t be what you can’t see.

Once you unlock a level of mastery in this new subject or area, there could be a whole world of incredible opportunity waiting for you.

Are you willing to take it?

What you should do now:

  1. Thinking of the subject or area you might go back to school for, write down a list of people who are already successful at it.
  2. For each of these people, create a list of opportunities they benefit from
  3. Now write down and reflect on how having those same opportunities would benefit you. What would it mean?

6. Develop Powerful Levels of Organization & Efficiency

As I mentioned before, going back to school aged 40 or more will be hard.

It’s likely you already have a lot of things going on. From ensuring bills are paid on time, savings are put aside for the future, and your family/friends are well looked after.

If this is a challenge you are going to take on, it will come with more pressure and potential stress. This means you will need to be even more organised and efficient than you already are.

Now you might be dissuaded but actually, this isn’t a bad thing by any means. In fact, the opposite is true: it’s a great thing.

If you can learn the skill of managing your time effectively enough to make this happen, you will be even better for it.

This is a chance to release a higher level of organisation and efficacy in your life. The successful, growth oriented person realizes that in the realm of uncertainty lies opportunity.

You can’t grow and win as much reward in a comfortable, certain place, as you can in an uncertain, uncomfortable place.

What you should do now:

Now that you understand why you are doing it. It’s time to take small steps forwards:

  1. Run the numbers. Sit down, get organized and create a clear idea of what you want to commit to and what that will cost. Not just in terms of money, but also time. There is no reward without sacrifice. So I want you to go into this as clear on what they may be.
  2. Consider alternatives. Are there any tasters you can try? Are there some part time courses? Something small you can do to test it out first? Maybe a free online course on a site like Teachable, Udemy etc. Is there someone you can speak to?
  3. Discuss it, get support and stay organised. Once you do take the leap, bring people with you. You are the sum of the support you enlist. Make sure you take care of yourself, and you stay organized.

Final Thoughts

Going back to school at 40 or above may seem like a big challenge, but it’s definitely possible.

All it takes is your courage to take the first step and get out of your comfort zone. There’re many ways you can start learning again to invest in something that will make you an expert. It’s really never too late!
